Week 9: Character Animation

Introduction

This week I started working on the plane animation and flying shots. These animation sequences are the most technical ones as there will be three different animations (character, plane and camera) playing on the same time.

Blendshapes of Plane

To animate the paper plane I used blendshapes. Initially, I thought to rig the plane but then I was having some issues to skin it that’s why I thought to create blendshapes.

Flying Animations

After making blendshapes of the plane, I started animating the flying sequences.

I made the character’s main controller the child of plane so that the character can be moved easily with the plane.

Week 8: Modeling the assets and Animation

Introduction

This week I modelled most of the assets required in the short film. Additionally, I continued working on the animation.

Assets for the Classroom

I modeled all the assets in blender. My aim was to make low poly objects with stylized textures.

Assets for the Notice Board

I wanted to give the maximum information about the character goal and story in this sequence. So, the textures in this sequence are pretty detailed. I tried to give the details about the quiz competition and its background on this notice board.

Notice Board Animation

Following is the animation I made for the notice board sequence. I still feel I need to adjust some timing of this sequence.

Week 7: Character Animation

Introduction

This week I started working on the animation shots for the dream sequence. I am planning to animate these shots cartoony and a bit detailed.

Character Animation

Going in the Portal

I had a lot of fun animating this sequence. When I was animating the pre-vis my mentor suggested me to make this shot very fluid so, I had that in mind while animating the sequence. I am pretty satisfied with this shot just need to fix some squash and stretch and arms.

Falling in the Dream

I wanted to animate this sequence very cartoony and funny. My mentor gave me some feedback on how to make this animation more detailed and cartoony. He gave me some feedback around believability and off shoot animation.

Following is the animation and the feedback I received.

I worked on the feedback I received on the animation shot.

I fixed arm movements and overshoot animation and got feedback again. My mentor advised to add more details in the sequence. Following is the animation and the feedback I received.

Running towards the Star

I got feedback around the run animation as well. The running animation is very jittery and fast and I need to make it smooth and slow.

Week 6: Character Animation

Introduction

After planning everything the last couple of months, I started working on the animation this week. I am going to build up the animation from the foundation of the Pre-vis that I had done in Term 2.

Shot 1

I started the first character animation shot this week. I recorded the reference first and then started animating it directly in spline.

Shot 1- Version 2

I polished the shot further and tried cleaning the arcs.

Shot 1- Version 3

In this version, I did animation of other characters in the scene as well. After that I got feedback from my mentor. In the video, you can see the main feedback he gave me.
